Gyeongbuk Province Launches 'Healthy Consumer Movement' ... ESG Management, Value Consumption, and Climate Crisis Overcoming

Consumer Day Commemoration, Resolution Statement by Five Organizations

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Gyeongsangbuk-do held the ‘Gyeongsangbuk-do Consumer Activists Conference’ on the 6th to commemorate Consumer Day.

Consumer Day, observed annually on December 3rd, is a statutory memorial day established in 1997 to raise awareness of consumer rights and consumer protection. It commemorates the date, December 3, 1979, when the Consumer Protection Act was passed by the National Assembly.

The conference was attended by over 300 participants, including five consumer organizations such as the Central Consumer Education Association Gyeongbuk Branch, Gyeongbuk YMCA Council, and Gyeongbuk YWCA Council, as well as related institutions and academics including the Daegu Regional Fair Trade Office and the Daegu branch of the Korea Consumer Agency.

The event featured a screening of videos showcasing the consumer rights activities of approximately 40,000 consumer activists in the region, awards for meritorious contributors who worked to establish consumer sovereignty, and discussions on development plans to improve quality of life for consumers.

They also read a resolution expressing agreement with the recently highlighted ESG management and value consumption, and a commitment to sustainable development and overcoming the international climate crisis.

Ha Daesung, Deputy Governor for Economy of Gyeongsangbuk-do, who attended the event, said, “The role of consumer activists is essential as we recover daily life from COVID-19,” and added, “I hope you will take the lead in coexisting by considering small business owners and small enterprises.”
