[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] Hong Joon-pyo, a member of the People Power Party, pointed out that "it is inappropriate to criticize Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party candidate, for the lowliness of his birth."
On the 5th, Hong posted on his Facebook, saying, "If people are judged by the nobility or lowliness of their birth, that is a story from the Joseon Dynasty."
He continued, "The president should be supported or not based on their conduct, actions, and passion for the country and its people." Regarding Lee’s past defense of his nephew in a dating-related murder case, Hong said, "A lawyer is merely a hired gun," and added, "It is wrong to criticize someone for defending a murderer."
He added, "The proper criticism is to examine whether his past behavior, actions, and attitude qualify him to be president."
Finally, Hong said, "It is unfortunate for South Korea that the presidential election is proceeding with only emotions and showmanship, while policies are missing."
Meanwhile, on the 4th, after visiting Gunsan Public Market in Jeonbuk, Lee mentioned his family background in a speech. He said, "My origin is lowly. Because my family is lowly, if you dig deeper, many dirty things come out," but added, "My lowly origin is not my fault, so please do not blame me. I have done my best despite that."
