[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The case in which about 20 stray cats were recently found dead in Busan under alleged abuse and prompted a police investigation has been revealed to be a baseless fabrication.

The death of the cats, which caused public outrage demanding the capture of an animal abuse perpetrator after being found in a brutal state, was confirmed to be due to a traffic accident, not abuse.

The ‘news’ that about 20 stray cats were found dead was also untrue.

Busan Police Agency announced on the 4th that the cats found dead in connection with an animal protection law violation case reported to Sasang Police Station on November 22 were not victims of animal abuse as claimed by animal organizations.

According to the police, one stray cat was confirmed to have been hit and killed by a passenger car while crossing the road.

The CCTV footage revealed the moment of the vehicle impact and the cat entering an alley and dying after the collision.

The police stated, “False information has caused residents to be anxious. We deployed additional criminal investigation teams and confirmed the cause of death through CCTV investigation.”

Regarding the ‘massacre of 20 stray cats,’ the reporter clarified that the informant never saw 20 cat corpses but speculated about the disappearance of about 20 cats they had been feeding for years, which was greatly exaggerated.

The informant’s speculation and the overreaction of animal protection groups led to a media ‘misreporting’ frenzy.

Earlier, on the 2nd, an animal protection group caused a stir by reporting to the police that about 20 cats had been found dead over three months since August in a residential area of Sasang-gu, Busan.

Unverified reports of abuse marks on the discovered cat corpses, including cats with faces burned by fire and skin peeled off around the eyes and nose, were widely reported by the media, causing a commotion.
