Budget Reduction and Promotion of Resident Participation-Based Design

Suncheon City, Small-Scale Projects for Next Year Will Be Designed Directly by Public Officials

[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 3rd that it will operate a joint design team for 60 days until January 31 next year.

The city formed a joint design team of 17 facility public officials from eup, myeon, and dong, divided into three groups, led by the head of the city construction department, to conduct in-house designs for a total of 329 projects worth about 5.7 billion KRW, including agricultural infrastructure, village roads, rivers, and sewage systems, which are resident-demanded projects.

Since these are resident-demanded projects directly related to citizens' lives, the city plans to promote resident-participatory designs suited to local conditions by listening to local residents' opinions from the site survey stage and aims to complete the projects before the farming season begins.

Additionally, by operating the joint design team and promoting early ordering of various construction projects, the city will contribute to revitalizing the local economy and save about 500 million KRW in detailed design service fees through in-house designs, greatly aiding the city’s finances.

In particular, since the design is carried out based on guidance from experienced staff from the initial design stage including planning, site surveys, and drawing preparation, more substantial construction projects can be promoted.

A construction department official said, “We plan to provide newly appointed public officials with opportunities for on-the-job training by having them participate in the joint design team and directly engage in design work alongside experienced officials, thereby fostering the job competencies of public officials.”
