Firefighters' Union Secures 200 Million KRW for 'Firefighters' Mind and Body Training Center' Construction Service Fee
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] On the 3rd, a budget of 200 million KRW for the construction service of the Firefighter Mental and Physical Training Center passed the National Assembly.
This is the result of efforts by the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions’ National Fire Safety Officials Labor Union (Chairman Hong Suntak, "Firefighters' Union"), which was launched on July 6.
Chairman Hong Suntak and the executive members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Firefighters' Union met with Democratic Party lawmakers Song Kiheon, Lee Kwangjae, Heo Young, Lee Jungmoon, Oh Younghwan, Lee Jongbae, Kim Jooyoung, Kang Deukgu, and People Power Party lawmaker Kwon Seongdong to explain the necessity and justification for the construction of the Firefighter Mental and Physical Training Center and conducted National Assembly activities to secure the budget.
The average lifespan of firefighters was found to be 70 years, the lowest among all public service occupations.
"The proportion of firefighters with health abnormalities approaches 65%, yet institutional support for the mental and physical health of firefighters remains insufficient. Considering the nature of their duties, tailored mental health management is necessary for firefighters who suffer stress and trauma from horrific accident scenes. However, compared to similar occupations, there are no related facilities (the police have 9 mental and physical training facilities, and the coast guard has 4)," they appealed to the political sphere, ultimately securing the budget for next year's basic design and planning service for the construction of the Firefighter Mental and Physical Training Center.
