Yoon Hee-geun, Director of the Police Agency's Autonomous Police Cooperation Policy Division, and 2 Others Promoted to Commissioner
Song Min-heon, Incheon Police Chief, Resigns Over 'Poor Response to Weapon Rampage'
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] On the 1st, the government carried out high-ranking police promotions, including promoting Yujin-gyu, Chief of Ulsan Police Agency, and Choi Seung-ryeol, Chief of Gangwon Police Agency, to the rank of Commissioner General.
The Commissioner General is the rank directly below the Commissioner General of the National Police Agency and is classified as a potential candidate group for the next National Police Agency Commissioner General. Among the 130,000 police officers nationwide, there are only seven at this level, including the Deputy Commissioner General of the National Police Agency, Chief of Seoul Police Agency, Chief of Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency, Chief of Busan Police Agency, Chief of Incheon Police Agency, President of the Police University, and Director of the National Investigation Headquarters.
Along with this personnel announcement, Song Min-heon, Chief of Incheon Police Agency, expressed his resignation, taking responsibility for the inadequate response to the recent 'inter-floor noise stabbing incident.' In his statement, Chief Song said, "I take full responsibility for the inadequate response at the Incheon Nonhyeon Police Station and will step down from the position of Chief of Incheon Police Agency and retire from the police. I apologize once again to the victims of this stabbing incident and wish for the speedy recovery of the victim who is still hospitalized."
Additionally, three individuals have been promoted to Commissioner General, who will be appointed as chiefs of city and provincial police agencies, directors at the National Police Agency level, and deputy chiefs of the Seoul Police Agency: Yoon Hee-geun, Policy Officer for Autonomous Police Cooperation at the National Police Agency; Yoo Jae-sung, Forensic Investigation Manager at the National Investigation Headquarters of the National Police Agency; and Song Byung-il, Head of Investigation at Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency.
In the past, appointments were made simultaneously with promotions to Commissioner General, but due to the autonomous police system implemented in July this year, the appointment of city and provincial police chiefs must be consulted with each city and provincial autonomous police committee, so only the promotion announcements were made first.
