[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Cho Hyung-joo] On December 1st, the first day of the month, the official first snow fell in the Gwangju area.
The Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration announced that at around 10:35 a.m. that day, the first snow of this winter fell at the official meteorological observation point in Unam-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju.
The snow that fell that day started as rain, then changed to sleet before turning into snow. Although snowfall was observed at the manned observation station, no accumulation was recorded on the snow gauge, so the official snowfall amount was not recorded.
This year’s first snow was observed 12 days earlier than last year (December 13) and 2 days later than the average date (November 29).
The Meteorological Administration explained that the snow fell due to clouds formed over the West Sea caused by the temperature difference between the sea and the atmosphere, influenced by a cold continental high-pressure system expanding from the northwest, with the clouds being brought in by northwesterly winds.
