[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Ahn Cheol-soo, the presidential candidate of the People’s Party, proposed on the 28th that all presidential candidates from both ruling and opposition parties promise to reflect the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Movement in the preamble of the Constitution.
After paying respects at the May 18 Democratic Cemetery in Buk-gu, Gwangju, Ahn said at a press conference, “For May 18 Gwangju to stand at the center of national unity, above all, all political circles from both ruling and opposition parties must awaken and reflect,” adding, “Let us promise to include the spirit of May 18 in the preamble of the Constitution.”
He said, “The next government should start discussions on constitutional amendment immediately after the beginning of its term and include in the preamble the content that honors and inherits the spirit of May 18,” and added, “Let us develop the proud history of democratization not as a tool for disputes and exploitation among political forces but as an opportunity for national unity.”
Ahn proposed that the presidential candidates from both ruling and opposition parties jointly pay respects at the May 18 Democratic Cemetery in early January next year.
Referring to the death of former President Chun Doo-hwan, he said, “With his death, we, Gwangju, and the Republic of Korea must move forward beyond confrontation, conflict, and wounds,” and added, “We must leave behind the painful history and find a new path to more greatly inherit and develop the spirit of May 18.”
