Junggu Sogong-dong Modern and Contemporary Buildings to Be Restored After Demolition... "Considering Safety Accidents"

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] The preservation method for modern and contemporary buildings located in the Sogong-dong area of Jung-gu, Seoul, will be changed to demolition followed by restoration.

On the 26th, Seoul held the 10th Urban and Architectural Joint Committee Delegated Subcommittee and approved the original plan for the Bukchang District Unit Plan and the detailed development plan for the Sogong-dong Special Planning Zone.

The area around 112-9 Sogong-dong, Jung-gu, is scheduled to host the Booyoung Hotel with 850 rooms. The city and Booyoung Housing have agreed that among the seven modern and contemporary buildings, five will be rebuilt at their current locations while preserving or restoring the existing exterior walls.

This amendment reflects the request of the project implementer, citing the risk of safety accidents due to the aging buildings, and the Cultural Heritage Administration's approval for changes to cultural heritage conditions, resulting in a change in the preservation method. Buildings originally decided to have their exterior walls preserved in their original locations will now be demolished and restored.

A Seoul city official stated, "This decision reasonably accepts the project implementer's position, considering practical conditions such as safety accidents during construction."
