Seoul Urban Science and Technology High School Housing Repair Volunteer Group, 5th Year of Home Repair Service as Part of Seongbuk-gu Seoul-type Innovative Education District Donggyo Dongrak Project... Over 40 Volunteers Deliver Warmth to Village Elders by Repairing Old Houses
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Students of Seoul Urban Science and Technology High School (Principal Manhee Lee) in Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Seungro Lee) successfully completed a home repair volunteer activity on the 6th.
Formed in 2017, the Seoul Urban Science and Technology High School Home Repair Volunteer Group has been working for five years to improve the poor living conditions of elderly people living alone in collaboration with Wolgok 1-dong as part of the Seongbuk-gu Seoul-type Innovative Education District Donggyo Dongrak Project.
This year, about 40 volunteers consisting of teachers and students took time on weekends without classes to carry out wallpapering and flooring replacement work for low-income elderly households in the area.
This year’s volunteer work was conducted four times in total on September 12, October 2, October 24, and November 6. Through meetings of the project team, not only the work on the repair day but also the pre- and post-work were planned in advance to take care of even the smallest details. A pre-inspection team was organized centered on the school to meet with the elderly in advance, understand the house structure, and estimate the repair costs. After the volunteer work was completed, waste separation and collection were handled by the Wolgok 1-dong Community Service Center.
A resident who observed the volunteer activity said, “I am proud of the students who work hard, sweating even on their days off,” and added, “I just learned about the Donggyo Dongrak project, and I am very happy as a resident of Wolgok 1-dong that the school and community center are working together for the village.”
An official from the district said, “We hope that the warm sharing of the home repair volunteer students for the village will be delivered to even more elderly people next year.”
