[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] A claim has emerged that a newly hired nurse working at a large hospital in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province, was subjected to habitual harassment by senior nurses before her death.

According to YTN on the 27th, Nurse A, who worked at Eulji University Hospital in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province, and her boyfriend B, who had been dating for two years, stated, "A was overwhelmed with heavy workloads and could not even eat meals on time."

B testified in detail, saying, "She was habitually scolded and humiliated publicly in front of others, and she was even hit with a pen."

When A, who always cried and appealed after work, was advised to seek treatment for depression, she reportedly refused out of concern that having medical records might lead to disadvantages at work.

A, who was usually struggling with work, expressed her intention to resign but was refused due to a regulation requiring a 60-day notice period. Afterwards, B said that A had expressed feelings such as "I really don't want to go to work. I want to die."

Earlier, Nurse A was found dead in the hospital dormitory on the 16th. During a video call with A, B was startled by a "thud" sound and requested confirmation from hospital officials, eventually learning that A had taken an extreme measure.

The bereaved family and B claim that "taeum (harassment), excessive workload, and a unilateral labor contract that does not allow resignation" were the causes of A's death. They also filed a complaint against A's senior nurses.

The Uijeongbu Police Department is currently investigating whether harassment occurred within the hospital.
