Putin Resumes Discussions on Israel Conflict with Palestinian Leader

[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] President Vladimir Putin resumed talks with the head of the Palestinian government, which had been suspended due to COVID-19, and discussed ways to resolve the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

On the 23rd (local time), President Putin stated during a meeting with Mahmoud Abbas, head of the Palestinian Authority visiting Russia, that "Russia's position regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict remains unchanged."

At the start of the meeting, President Putin emphasized, "According to previous United Nations Security Council resolutions, the solution must consider the interests of all local residents and be based on the principle of two independent states." He added, "No matter how difficult it is, Russia will strive in this direction."

Russia has supported the 'two-state solution principle,' which recognizes both Palestine and Israel as states based on UN Security Council resolutions and internationally recognized legal norms.

During the meeting held at the presidential residence in Sochi, Russia, both sides discussed ways to resolve the Israel-Palestine conflict, cooperation in responding to COVID-19, and other bilateral cooperation measures.

In an interview with local media, Abbas said, "I am confident that Russia will support our efforts," and expressed hope that "U.S. President Joe Biden will recognize Palestine as a partner in peace negotiations and keep his commitment to the peaceful resolution of Middle East issues."
