[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Cho Hyung-joo] Jang Hui-guk, Superintendent of Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, stated on the 23rd, "I firmly oppose any form of national honor for the death of former President Jeon Du-hwan."

On this day, Superintendent Jang said in a statement, "Jeon Du-hwan, who used illegitimately obtained power to massacre the citizens of Gwangju, passed away on November 23," adding, "Despite countless opportunities, Jeon Du-hwan never showed any reflection or apology before history, and I firmly oppose any form of national honor for his death."

He continued, "Until just before his death, Jeon Du-hwan tried to cover up the truth by denying any connection to the May 18 Democratic Movement, and even escaped the final judgment of the law through death," emphasizing, "His actions, which were filled with pitiful self-excuses without taking responsibility for the massacre, will surely stand trial before history even after death."

Superintendent Jang concluded, "Gwangju will continue to walk tirelessly to seek the truth about the May 1980 events, and will hold those responsible for the Gwangju massacre accountable through firm evaluation and punishment," and stated, "The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education will teach our students to take pride in the May 18 and democratic history achieved through the sacrifices and dedication of many people, and to inherit its spirit and values."
