Leap to a Hub of Oyster Farming Industry... Realizing Shinan, the 1004 Island Where Youth Return

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Park Woo-ryang) took the first step toward becoming a hub for individual oyster farming industry by holding the nationwide first 'Individual Oyster Dedicated Infrastructure' completion ceremony on the 17th.
According to the county on the 23rd, the event was attended by Governor Park Woo-ryang, Shinan-gun Council Chairman Kim Hyuk-sung, Jeollanam-do Agricultural and Fisheries Committee Chairman Jeong Gwang-ho, members of the Agricultural and Fisheries Committee, Assemblyman Kim Moon-soo, Shinan-gun Council members, heads of related organizations, students of the Individual Oyster Farming School, and local residents. They reviewed the progress report on the industrialization of individual oyster farming and toured the individual oyster dedicated infrastructure.
The individual oyster seed breeding center spans 927㎡ (300 pyeong) and, based on research results on individual oyster seed production and intermediate cultivation, has been shipping mature oysters since August after conducting exposed individual oyster table-style pilot farming at seven locations including Jaeun-myeon.
The individual oyster dedicated processing and storage facility, completed in September, covers 344㎡ (104 pyeong) and maximizes the safe and hygienic product value of individual oysters through automatic washing, sorting, packaging lines for oyster shipment, and a sterilization and cold chain system-equipped depuration facility.
Additionally, to enhance the image of clean Shinan, the ‘Shinan1004 Oyster’ brand has been developed, and the 1004 Islands Shinan logo is engraved on the shells. The oysters are being pilot supplied to VIP lounges and restaurants at Shinsegae Department Stores in Gangnam and Daejeon, and supply contracts are being pursued with the Shinsegae Department Store Myeongdong Food Market and famous oyster bars.
Governor Park Woo-ryang stated, “We aim to challenge the eco-friendly individual oyster farming industrialization based on the clean tidal flats designated as a World Natural Heritage site. We will scale up aquaculture facilities through government public projects and foster this as a strategic base industry through private sector transfer to realize Shinan, the 1004 Islands, where young people return.”
He especially added, “Through FDA shellfish production designated areas, eco-friendly aquaculture certification (ASC), and participation in the World Seafood Expo, we will promote the value of ‘Shinan1004 Oyster’ globally to the Americas, Europe, and Asia, contributing to foreign currency earnings through exports.”
