When Asked About 5·18, "It's a Time of Mourning, So Political Talk Is Not Timely"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kum Bo-ryeong] Yoon Seok-yeol, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, said on the 23rd regarding the news of former President Jeon Du-hwan's death, "I respectfully express my condolences to the deceased and offer my sympathies to the bereaved family."
On the same day, Yoon made this statement when asked about the death of the former president during a meeting with reporters just before lunch with the preliminary presidential candidates.
When asked about his plan to pay respects, Yoon explained, "I don't know exactly when I will go yet, but considering the schedule, since he is a former president, I think I should go."
Regarding the comment that "the former president passed away without leaving any words related to the May 18 incident," he replied, "Since he has just passed away and it is a mourning period, it seems inappropriate to make political remarks related to him at this time."
Regarding the controversy over the state funeral, Yoon said, "I think the government will consider the wishes of the bereaved family and the sentiments of the people before making a decision."
