[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering announced on the 22nd that it sponsored the 2021 Maritime Cybersecurity Seminar jointly hosted by the Navy and Korea University Graduate School of Information Security. Related organizations such as ship cybersecurity company DS Lab Company, Korean Register, S-1, and HMM Ocean Service participated in the event.
Various measures to strengthen maritime cybersecurity were discussed, including the development of cyber defense for ship weapon systems, directions for ship design technology, integrated ship cyber threat response systems, current status and prospects of maritime cybersecurity certification, and security for smart ports and shipyards. This event was organized as interest in cybersecurity has been increasing recently with the development of smart ships and autonomous vessels. Ships are especially important because hacking can lead to significant damage to national security.
Since 2019, Daewoo Shipbuilding has been conducting research on ship cybersecurity and has promoted technological cooperation to advance ship security technology, including launching a cybersecurity research group with Korea University and small and medium-sized enterprises. Yoo Soo-jun, head of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s Special Ship Business Division, said, "To effectively operate next-generation advanced ships such as the Korean-type light aircraft carrier (CVX) and next-generation destroyer (KDDX), as a system integrator, we will take the lead in strengthening the cyber survivability of our Navy’s maritime power together with specialized research institutions, universities, and companies."
