[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] A police officer caught driving under the influence within the police station where he works was found to have previously attempted to manipulate working hours by trying to record overtime.

According to the police, on the 21st, Sergeant A of the Incheon Yeonsu Police Station returned to the station past midnight after having a dinner gathering with colleagues from the same department on the 5th. Sergeant A approached the overtime terminal on the second floor of the main police station building and attempted facial recognition before moving to the parking lot and getting behind the wheel. However, the time Sergeant A recorded for overtime was past midnight and thus was not recognized as overtime.

The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency is conducting an internal investigation to determine whether Sergeant A’s actions constitute a violation of duty. Additionally, from the 15th of this month until the 10th of next month, a special inspection on duty compliance will be conducted for four weeks targeting various departments and frontline police stations. The main focus of the inspection is on improper receipt of work allowances, such as recording overtime after leaving work for personal errands.

Previously, Sergeant A was caught driving about 20 to 30 meters in a drunken state in the Yeonsu Police Station parking lot around 12:40 a.m. on the 6th.

Investigations revealed that after the dinner gathering, he returned to the police station and waited for a designated driver before driving from the staff parking lot to the public parking lot.

At the time, a duty officer in the police station’s control room noticed Sergeant A staggering on the closed-circuit television (CCTV) inside the building and detected signs of drunk driving.

The police are investigating Sergeant A on charges of drunk driving under the Road Traffic Act, while suspending him from duty and conducting an internal investigation.
