Muju-gun Reenacts Procession for Joseon Wangjo Sillok Jeoksangsan Archive Enshrinement

[Muju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Muju County announced on the 16th that it reenacted the procession for enshrining the Joseon Dynasty Annals stored at the Jeoksangsan Archive, originally from the Myohyangsan Archive in 1634, throughout the Muju County area.

The reenactment event began at 1 PM with the enshrinement procession starting from the Buk Jeonju Tax Office Muju Civil Service Center and proceeding to the Deungnamu Sports Complex intersection. The Muju magistrate’s procession departed from Muju County Office, passed the U-Competition Memorial Bridge, met the enshrinement procession at the Deungnamu Sports Complex intersection, and then marched back to Muju County Office, where a storage ceremony at the Muju government office was held.

Following this, the Jeoksangsan Archive enshrinement procession proceeded via Muju County Office, Terminal Intersection, and Choi Buk-mi Art Museum, arriving at Hanpungnu Pavilion where the enshrinement ceremony for the Jeoksangsan Archive was conducted, concluding the reenactment event.

Notably, this year’s event included not only the enshrinement procession but also performances such as tightrope walking and lion dance, providing additional attractions for the residents.

This reenactment of the enshrinement procession is based on historical verification related to the enshrinement of the Joseon Dynasty Annals from the Myohyangsan Archive to the Jeoksangsan Archive, and is highly regarded for its historical significance in fostering national historical and cultural pride in South Korea.

The reenactment of the Joseon Dynasty Annals enshrinement procession and ceremony replicates the historical scene of enshrining the Annals at the Jeoksangsan Archive, including the procession, the storage ceremony at the Muju government office, and the enshrinement ceremony placing the Annals into the archive.

According to Muju County, in December 1634, the 13 volumes of the Annals (from King Taejo to King Myeongjong) and general books stored at the Myohyangsan Archive were enshrined at the Jeoksangsan Archive.

Since the transfer of the Annals was a solemn state ritual, a large-scale welcoming ceremony was held when the Annals transported from Hanyang arrived at the Muju government office.

The Annals were temporarily stored at the government office before being moved to the archive site on the date and time designated by the Royal Observatory.

Even when moving from the government office to the archive, a ceremonial guard band was organized, playing music as they marched.

Mang Gap-sang, Director of the Muju Cultural Center, stated, “Muju County and the Muju Cultural Center finalized through last year’s final research that the reenactment of the Joseon Dynasty Annals Jeoksangsan Archive enshrinement procession would be recreated as realistically and authentically as possible, featuring the Hyangjeongja (incense burner palanquin), Chaeyeo (Annals chest palanquin), 165 performers, and seven horses.” He added, “The first reenactment of the Jeoksangsan Archive enshrinement was held in 2019 but was not conducted last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic; this year, the event resumed.”

Meanwhile, the Jeoksangsan Archive is the place where 5,541 volumes, including the Joseon Dynasty Annals, National Treasure No. 151 registered as a UNESCO Memory of the World, and the royal genealogy book Seonwonrok, were stored for about 300 years.

The currently restored Jeoksangsan Archive (designated Jeollabuk-do Monument No. 88 in 1995) exhibits 42 replica volumes of the Joseon Dynasty Annals and Seonwonrok.
