[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jin-young] Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, pledged to promote the game industry by establishing a ‘Sangmu e-Sports Team’ within the military.
On the morning of the day, Lee attended the inaugural general meeting of the ‘Parliamentary Group for the Development of e-Sports’ held at the National Assembly Members’ Office Building and said, “By establishing this within the military, going to the army should not be a hardship but an opportunity to demonstrate one’s abilities and develop skills.”
He added, “It is important for young people to spend their lives doing what they like, and even during the process of fulfilling their military service obligations, it would be good to express themselves and contribute to the nation and society. e-Sports has been adopted as an official event in the Asian Games, and competition between countries is taking place. Playing games should not be criticized as a deviation.”
Lee also criticized the Park Geun-hye administration’s regulation of the game industry and argued that regulations should be lifted. He said, “South Korea was leading the global game industry, but the Park Geun-hye government defined games as a social evil, saying ‘games are like drugs,’” and criticized, “We have the painful memory of being overtaken by China due to these regulations.”
He continued, “The government should support the game industry but not crack down on it,” and “The role of the government is to open a stage where free creativity and individuality can be expressed.”
On the same day, Lee referred to the classic game ‘Galaga’ and appealed familiarity by saying, “You can achieve the desired score in Galaga for as long as you want. It takes an hour to reach one million points.”
