[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] The People Power Party introduced on the 14th that it has developed a program called ‘Kraken’ to respond to comment manipulation during the presidential election period. The People Power Party plans to collect comment information related to major keywords in next year’s presidential election, and if any abnormal signs are detected and public opinion manipulation is suspected, they will report it to investigative agencies to actively respond to comment manipulation such as that by Druking.
On the same day, Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, and Lee Young, chairman of the Digital Party Committee, held a press conference at the National Assembly to announce the development and operation policy of ‘Kraken’.
Named after the legendary giant squid Kraken, this program was created to monitor public opinion manipulation activities similar to the so-called ‘King Crab’ used by Kim Dong-won, known as Druking, for internet public opinion manipulation during the last presidential election.
The People Power Party explained, "Kraken is a system designed to prevent distortion and manipulation of public opinion by groups beyond the expression of the people's will and opinions. It automatically collects articles and comment information related to major keywords on the internet, automatically analyzes abnormal behavior based on artificial intelligence (AI) to generate reports, and the operating team (Kraken team) reports suspicious comments and IPs related to public opinion manipulation to investigative agencies."
During the last presidential election, King Crab manipulated internet news comments and exposure rankings through approximately 1.18 million comments and 88.4 million article recommendations.
Chairman Lee said, "The People Power Party will operate Kraken during this presidential election period to catch illegal activities by forces manipulating and distorting public opinion on the internet."
Leader Lee stated, "In both the last and the previous presidential elections, the public suffered greatly due to public opinion manipulation. We have introduced tools to track and strengthen measures so that such manipulation cannot even be dreamed of in this election." He added, "Until now, it was difficult for political parties to plan such measures, but Chairman Lee, an expert, planned it well." Regarding concerns that this program functions as a kind of comment monitoring, he mentioned, "It is not about collecting opposing opinions, and it will not be used for any purpose other than fair elections, so I say this with a clear conscience."
