Expansion of audio content through adapted and delicate direction in 'audio drama'
Approximately 15-minute 'short-form' audio content
81% completion rate for the original novel 'Nom-ui Gieok'
[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] Millie’s Library announced on the 9th that it has released an audio drama, an audio content adapted from original books into a drama format to be listened to with ears. The first work Millie’s Library introduced as an audio drama is the mystery thriller novel "Nom-ui Gieok" (Memory of the Nom) by author Yoon Ina.
The audio dramas presented by Millie’s Library are differentiated from existing audiobooks that read the entire book or summaries by creating scripts adapted from the original text centered on direct dialogues depicting real situations, and having multiple actors and voice actors perform with vivid voice acting. They are produced in short-form episodes of about 15 minutes each so that they can be lightly enjoyed while doing other tasks, and are developed as a series of about 10 episodes. Since listeners can also read the original books on Millie’s Library after listening to the audio dramas, it enables an extended reading experience that connects audio content to the actual books.
The first audio drama from Millie’s Library, Yoon Ina’s "Nom-ui Gieok," is a mystery thriller about a neuroscientist who invented technology to delete and transplant memories and pursues the murderer who killed his wife. It is a popular work that won the "2020 Naver Groundbreaking Creative Funding" contest and has been decided to be adapted into a webtoon next year. On Millie’s Library, it shows a high immersion rate with a completion probability of 81%, far exceeding the average in the novel category. A total of 12 actors portrayed distinctive characters, and tense background sounds were added to maximize immersion. Millie’s Library plans to release an audio drama of the historical romance novel "Byeolan-gan Assi" on the 23rd.
Kim Tae-hyung, head of the content team at Millie’s Library, said, “The audio drama was created by carefully analyzing not only the details that help readers immerse themselves in the content to feel closer to the actual books and stories, but also the content consumption patterns of the new generation. We expect that audio dramas will not only expand the range of audio content provided by Millie’s Library but also serve as a new driving force in revitalizing the ecosystem for both authors and publishers by increasing accessibility to books.”
Meanwhile, as the MZ generation, who feel fatigue from video content, began to pay attention to audio content, the related market is entering its second golden age. Overseas, audio dramas are highly valued for their potential to be utilized as IPs expanded into formats such as games and animations. Millie’s Library is also actively producing audio content based on books to secure reading content and provide even newer reading experiences.
From full-length audiobooks with multi-casting voice actors that vividly bring out the characteristics of characters appearing in books, to summary audiobooks read directly by authors or celebrities, and the newly introduced audio dramas, Millie’s Library plans to continue diversifying the audio content it offers.
