Former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol was confirmed as the People Power Party’s presidential candidate on the 5th. According to the results of the People Power Party’s national convention held at the Baekbeom Kim Koo Memorial Hall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, Candidate Yoon secured first place with a final vote share of 47.85%, officially confirming him as the party’s presidential candidate.

Rival candidate Representative Hong Joon-pyo received 41.5%, former Representative Yoo Seung-min 7.47%, and former Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong 3.17%, respectively.

On the day, Candidate Yoon stated, "This presidential election is a battle between common-sense Yoon Seok-yeol and unreasonable Lee Jae-myung. It is a fight between a rationalist and a populist." He added, "I will definitely achieve regime change. I will put an end to politics of division and anger, and politics of corruption and plunder." All other candidates who participated in the primary also said they would "cleanly accept the primary results."

Supporters of Candidate Yoon gathered near the Baekbeom Kim Koo Memorial Hall, raising their voices saying, "I feel really good. I think we can definitely achieve regime change." Another supporter emphasized, "The people are very dissatisfied with the current Moon Jae-in administration, but I am confident that Candidate Yoon will give us hope."

On the other hand, citizens who supported Candidate Hong Joon-pyo could not hide their regret. One citizen said, "The reason why people in their 20s and 30s supported the People Power Party was because Representative Lee Jun-seok was elected and they thought the party would ride the wave of reform," adding, "The image Candidate Yoon has shown is not one of reform but no different from the old-fashioned politicians we have seen so far," strongly criticizing him.

Another citizen said, "Young people supported Candidate Hong Joon-pyo out of anger that President Moon Jae-in ruined the country," and added, "The Prosecutor General appointed by the Moon administration investigated former Presidents Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye and caused many controversies by joining the party without an apology, so I don’t understand how Candidate Yoon became the candidate."

Meanwhile, after being confirmed as the People Power Party’s presidential candidate, Yoon Seok-yeol’s first schedule is to visit Garak Market in Songpa-gu at 7 a.m. on the 6th. He will then have a luncheon meeting with Representative Lee Jun-seok at a restaurant in Mapo-gu, Seoul. It is expected that discussions will take place regarding the future composition of the election campaign committee.
