[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Cho Hyung-joo] Chonnam National University is establishing a Graduate School of Data Science to nurture data scientists, whose demand is expected to steadily increase across various sectors of our society.
According to Chonnam National University on the 31st, the university received approval from the Ministry of Education on the 28th and has begun full-scale preparations such as recruiting new students and securing faculty members.
The Graduate School of Data Science is a two-year master's program that will select 50 new students and commence classes from March next year. The curriculum focuses on education centered on decision-making and actions utilizing analysis results from data acquisition, solving problems required in each specialized domain, and strengthening parallel processing application capabilities of data.
Accordingly, it is expected to provide a new opportunity for students with basic knowledge and application skills in their majors such as humanities, social sciences, economics, medicine and pharmacy, natural sciences, agriculture, arts, and sports to transform into data experts.
Earlier, in February, Chonnam National University signed an agreement with Gwangju City and Seoul National University to mutually support the development of data science and regional innovation platform projects, and in July, it also signed a business agreement with Seoul National University and Kyungpook National University.
Chonnam National University has been promoting the establishment of the Graduate School of Data Science to proactively respond to the emergence of a new academic paradigm based on data and the birth of an industrial ecosystem, and to cultivate professionals who will lead the creation of a new industrial ecosystem in line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution era.
Director Kim Soo-hyung predicted, “The utilization of data science is increasing in various fields of our society, and especially in the case of Gwangju, considering the establishment of the AI cluster and the linkage with the regional innovation platform project, the demand for specialized personnel will further increase.”
