"Give me allowance..." 90-Year-Old Great-Grandson of Dental Clinic Director Causes Disturbance at Hospital, Fined

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] A man in his 90s who caused a disturbance at a hospital run by his great-grandson, a dentist, demanding "allowance," was sentenced to a fine by the court.

According to the legal community on the 30th, Judge Go Soyoung of the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 25 recently sentenced Mr. A (91, male), who was indicted on charges of obstruction of business, to a fine of 500,000 won.

Mr. A was prosecuted for disturbing dental treatment for about 20 minutes by shouting and causing a commotion at a dental clinic in Jongno-gu, Seoul, around noon on June 24, demanding "give me 5 million won allowance" from Director Mr. B (48). Mr. A is Mr. B's great-grandfather.

It was also investigated that on May 18, he visited the hospital, caused a disturbance demanding to bring Mr. B, and waited by sitting on a sofa in the customer waiting room for about 40 minutes.

Article 314 (Obstruction of Business) Paragraph 1 of the current Criminal Act stipulates that "a person who obstructs another person's business by force or other means shall be punished by imprisonment for not more than five years or a fine not exceeding 15 million won."

The court pointed out, "The defendant obstructed the victim's dental treatment business twice because the victim did not give him allowance," and "there is a need for punishment accordingly."

The court stated, "Although the defendant has a prior record of punishment for similar obstruction of business offenses, the defendant admitted to the crime in this case, the degree of force used at each offense was relatively mild, and considering all sentencing factors including the defendant's current old age, the sentence was determined."
