Warning from China's Foreign Ministry, Defense Ministry, and National People's Congress
Using Taiwan Card Politically Severely Damages US Interests
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] China's National People's Congress (NPC), the country's parliament, has issued warnings regarding Taiwan's independence aspirations, signaling a comprehensive pressure campaign by Chinese authorities against Taiwan. Until now, warnings and pressure on Taiwan have been primarily handled by China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of National Defense. China appears enraged as Taiwan's leadership reveals cooperation with the United States across broad sectors including the military.
According to the state-run Xinhua News Agency on the 29th, the NPC stated in a declaration the previous day that some European countries, including the Czech Republic, are undermining the "One China" principle, and China will not tolerate Taiwan's separation (independence).
The NPC also emphasized that China's Anti-Secession Law clearly stipulates adherence to the One China principle, suppression of Taiwan's separation, and opposition to interference in internal affairs, warning that countries interfering in the Taiwan issue will inevitably face adverse consequences.
China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of National Defense further escalated their warnings toward Taiwan.
Wang Wenbin, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, warned at a regular briefing that "Taiwan's separation is a path to death." He raised his voice, saying, "No one should underestimate the firm determination, will, and strong capability of the Chinese people to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity."
Tan Kefei, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, also warned on the same day, "The Chinese People's Liberation Army maintains high vigilance to be ready to participate in combat whenever the Communist Party and the people require, and if a fight occurs, victory is certain." He further condemned Taiwan authorities, stating, "Inviting foreign forces to promote separation is a despicable act and an obstacle to the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation."
The Communist Party's official newspaper, the People's Daily, argued in an editorial on the 29th that some U.S. politicians are sending wrong signals to Taiwan by mentioning Taiwan's participation in the United Nations (UN). It warned that if the U.S. continues to politically exploit the Taiwan card, China-U.S. relations will be seriously damaged, which will severely harm U.S. interests.
This intense reaction from Chinese authorities and state media came after Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen revealed in an interview with U.S. CNN on the 27th (local time) that U.S. military personnel are participating in Taiwan's military training.
