Industrial Complexes Catching Two Rabbits: 'Digital + Eco-Friendly'

Fair Innovation Simulation Center, Reducing Tenant Costs and Increasing Sales
Energy Efficiency Through Factory Energy Management System (FEMS) Deployment

Industrial Complexes Catching Two Rabbits: 'Digital + Eco-Friendly' Sihwa National Industrial Complex

#. Semiconductor printed circuit board (PCB) specialist TLB has improved its existing data processing method and established an AI-based ‘thickness estimation model.’ This was achieved through the construction of a database within the Innovation Data Center of the Gyeonggi Banwol·Siwha Smart Green Industrial Complex (Smart Green Industrial Complex), where the company is located. Accuracy verification showed that the error rate between the model’s predictions and actual measurements was reduced from over 5% to below 2%.

#. The Gwangju Advanced Smart Green Industrial Complex has introduced an integrated comprehensive energy management system that manages heterogeneous energies such as electricity, heat sources, and gas. Tenant companies measure energy data used in production facilities through a cloud computing-based factory energy management service. Improvements in the air conditioning system through this have reduced energy consumption by 41%.

Industrial complexes are transforming into competitive and environmentally friendly manufacturing spaces through digitalization and eco-friendliness. Moving away from the image of outdated factory chimneys, they are emerging as the center of the Korean New Deal, encompassing the Digital New Deal based on information and communication technology (ICT) competitiveness and the Green New Deal for low-carbon and green growth.

According to the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation (hereinafter referred to as KICO) on the 28th, ten representative tasks have been identified and are being promoted for the digital and green transition of industrial complexes. The ten major projects include expanding logistics platforms, process innovation simulation centers, innovation data centers, standard manufacturing innovation process modules, smart manufacturing innovation infrastructure, smart energy platform construction, energy self-sufficient infrastructure construction, smart booths, integrated control centers, and advanced smart manufacturing workforce training.

In the digital transformation sector, projects utilizing companies’ data are underway. These aim to reduce new product development costs and improve production efficiency for tenant companies. Additionally, logistics conditions for each industrial complex are surveyed, and based on the derived logistics characteristics, smart logistics platform services are being operated.

Protec, a tenant company in the Banwol·Siwha Industrial Complex, reduced labor input time and improved order management processes through automation of attendance management tasks. Daemo ENG automated tasks such as export data research for the Korea International Trade Association by introducing a Robotic Process Automation (RPA) solution. In the Changwon Industrial Complex, 40 manufacturing companies participated in the process innovation simulation center project, achieving cost savings on prototype design and production budgets that typically exceed 100 million KRW per case. A company in the Gumi Industrial Complex increased sales by 140% after receiving technical support for characteristic analysis and prototype development of secondary batteries through the materials and components alliance project.

Various projects are also underway in the green transition sector aimed at low-carbon and high-efficiency industrial complexes with high energy consumption. A representative example is the smart energy platform project, which distributes factory energy management systems (FEMS) to individual companies and collects energy data to reduce corporate energy consumption.

In the Gumi Industrial Complex, a 5G-based smart energy management system is being distributed to promote carbon emission trading between companies and achieve early low-carbon realization. Additionally, the Banwol·Siwha Industrial Complex has established an integrated visualization center (TVC) to monitor industrial complex energy trends and enable integrated control.

Kim Jeong-hwan, Director of KICO, stated, "We will spare no support to ensure the smooth promotion of the Smart Green Industrial Complex project, an innovative strategy to transform the industrial complexes that form the backbone of the regional economy." He added, "We will continue to support tenant companies in various ways and strive to achieve results from the Smart Green Industrial Complex project."
