Five-Day National Funeral... Prime Minister Kim Bu-gyeom Appointed as Funeral Committee Chairman
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The government announced on the 27th that it has decided to hold a state funeral for the late former President Roh Tae-woo through deliberation by the State Council based on the State Funeral Act.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety explained that although former President Roh, who served as the 13th president, had historical faults related to the December 12 incident and the May 18 Democratic Movement, his contributions through the Northern Policy including the Basic Agreement on Reconciliation, Non-aggression and Exchanges and Cooperation between the South and the North after being elected by direct vote, as well as his efforts to pay the confiscated fines after sentencing, were taken into consideration. However, the Ministry added that burial in the national cemetery will not be conducted in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.
The chairman of the state funeral committee will be Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum, and the Minister of the Interior and Safety will serve as the funeral execution committee chairman and oversee the funeral. The funeral will be named the State Funeral of the late former President Roh Tae-woo, and the funeral period will be five days, from the 26th to the 30th.
The farewell ceremony and burial ceremony will be held on October 30, with the location to be decided through discussions between the funeral committee and the bereaved family. During the state funeral period, the national and local governments and public institutions will fly the national flag at half-mast in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety stated, "The state funeral will be conducted centered on the funeral committee to be formed, considering the deceased’s will for a modest funeral and the COVID-19 quarantine situation."
