'The 9th Dobong Lantern Exhibition' Held at Uicheon and Banghakcheon 2018 Dobong-gu Lantern Festival

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dobong-gu (Mayor Dongjin Lee) will hold the region’s representative festival, the ‘9th Dobong Lantern Exhibition,’ from October to November along the Uicheon and Banghakcheon streams.

The ‘2021 9th Lantern Exhibition’ will take place at two locations frequently visited by local residents for walking: Uicheon and Banghakcheon. First, the Uicheon Lantern Exhibition, themed “Art Appearing at Sunset, Uicheon,” will be held from October 29 to November 7 along the section from Uicheon Bridge to Ssanghan Bridge. The Banghakcheon Lantern Exhibition, under the theme “Moonlight Garden, Banghakcheon,” will continue from November 19 to November 28 along the section from Jeongbyeongwon to Geumgang Amium Parktown.

The district plans to present an exhibition combining traditional lanterns and modern media art to residents, and to propose a new festival format considering the COVID-19 situation by using a ‘walking thru’ method that naturally allows visitors to keep distance for safety.

Safety personnel and hand sanitizers will be placed throughout the exhibition areas, and regular disinfection will be conducted.

The exhibition features a total of 79 lanterns of 29 types across four themes: characters, animals, pungmulnori (traditional Korean folk music and dance), and photo zones. Visitors can also experience various forms of light art such as LED sculptures themed on light and lines, gobos lighting decorating autumn paths, bridge LED landscapes, media facades, and projection mapping.

Mayor Dongjin Lee of Dobong-gu said, “Excluding performances or experiential programs that gather crowds, we expanded the exhibition areas to create a ‘lantern exhibition’ style festival that can be enjoyed while walking for exercise. We hope everyone enjoys the night view of the city lit by lanterns along the stream near their homes after a long time, and finds comfort and hope in the lanterns that fulfill their wishes.”

Hosted and organized by Dobong-gu, and sponsored by Seoul City and Woori Bank, this exhibition started in 2013 and is now in its 9th year, establishing itself as Dobong-gu’s representative festival and a Seoul city brand festival.
