Police Begin Investigating DDoS Attack in 'KT Network Outage'

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] On the morning of the 25th, the police began an investigation to accurately ascertain the facts regarding the disruption in the KT network caused by a large-scale DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack.

An official from the National Police Agency's National Investigation Headquarters stated, "We have instructed the Cyber Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency to investigate the extent of the damage and the scale of the attack," adding, "We will review necessary measures with related organizations and, if criminal charges are found, proceed with a preliminary investigation before formal indictment."

The police explained that the case was assigned to the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency considering that KT's headquarters is located in Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi Province. A police official added, "We will also consider manpower support if necessary."

Starting around 11 a.m. that day, a disruption occurred in the KT network, causing significant inconvenience nationwide. Not only public institutions but also major corporate servers experienced outages, leading to operational confusion.

KT identified the cause of the network disruption as a large-scale DDoS attack and has activated its Crisis Management Committee to respond. KT stated, "We will do our best for a swift recovery."
