[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] Special Representative for North Korea Affairs at the U.S. Department of State Sung Kim will visit South Korea on the 23rd for the South Korea-U.S. senior nuclear negotiators' talks.
After arriving in the afternoon of the same day, Representative Kim is scheduled to meet with South Korea's senior nuclear negotiator, Noh Kyu-duk, Director General for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the morning of the 24th to discuss ways to resume the dialogue process on the Korean Peninsula.
The South Korea-U.S. senior nuclear negotiators will meet again less than a week after holding trilateral talks with Japan in Washington D.C. on the 19th (local time).
In this context, it is expected that South Korea and the U.S. will seek dialogue measures with North Korea regarding nuclear and missile issues.
Attention is focused on whether the U.S. will present a more advanced position on the South Korean government's proposed declaration of the end of the war during this consultation.
The U.S. government is reportedly conducting an internal review of the potential impacts and benefits that could arise from the declaration of the end of the war.
Based on the results of this review, it is anticipated that consultations with the South Korean side will continue.
Meanwhile, Representative Kim's visit schedule was originally planned for two nights and three days starting on the 22nd, but was shortened to one night and two days due to a one-day delay in arrival. The South Korea-U.S. talks were also postponed from the 23rd to the 24th.
Kim, who also serves as the U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia, is expected to depart for Indonesia on the same day after concluding the consultations.
