Medical and Funeral Assistance of 2 Million Won Each
Includes Provisions for Animal Welfare and Protection
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gyeonggi Namyangju City has established a basis to support treatment expenses and other costs for citizens who suffer damage such as being bitten by abandoned animals.
On the 23rd, according to Namyangju City and the City Council, City Councilor Kim Young-sil recently passed the "Animal Welfare and Support Ordinance for Damage Caused by Abandoned Animals," which she proposed as the main sponsor.
Accordingly, from now on in Namyangju City, if a citizen is injured by an abandoned animal, up to 2 million KRW can be supported once per incident, and in case of death, a funeral subsidy of 2 million KRW can be provided.
The ordinance also includes measures to minimize social conflicts caused by stray cats, such as capturing stray cats, neutering and releasing them, and installing communal feeding stations.
This ordinance contains provisions to establish and implement an animal welfare plan and to set up and operate an "Animal Welfare Committee" and an "Animal Protection Center" with participation from both public and private sectors.
Earlier in Namyangju, in May, a woman in her 60s walking on the street was bitten and killed by a large dog wandering the village. The police have booked the nearby dog farm owner, identified as the dog's owner, on charges of negligent homicide.
