[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The Ministry of Employment and Labor is conducting inspections of platform companies for the first time to reduce industrial accident incidents among delivery workers.
The Ministry announced on the 19th that it plans to inspect 28 companies nationwide by next month. They will investigate companies operating smartphone applications that mediate between restaurants and delivery workers. These companies are considered delivery intermediaries under the Industrial Safety and Health Act.
First, they will check whether these companies regularly provide delivery workers with safety driving information. They will also examine whether the companies have properly fulfilled their obligation not to pressure delivery workers to the extent that it causes industrial accidents.
For companies that have contracts such as consignment agreements with delivery workers and work together on delivery tasks, the inspection will verify whether they provide safety and health education to the workers and instruct them to wear protective gear.
Kwon Kisub, Director of the Industrial Safety and Health Headquarters, said, "This is the first workplace inspection targeting only food delivery platform operators," adding, "Through the inspection, we will analyze the causes of industrial accidents among delivery workers more thoroughly and review measures to reduce accidents."
