Goheung-gun, Making Every Effort to Be Designated as a Legal Preliminary Cultural City

[Goheung=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shim Jeong-woo] Jeonnam Goheung-gun (Governor Song Gwi-geun) announced on the 21st that it held a Cultural City Promotion Committee to communicate with citizens and discuss ways to smoothly promote the cultural city in order to be designated as a legal cultural city.

Goheung-gun applied for approval of the cultural city creation plan last June to be designated as a legal cultural city by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and participated in a written review and online interview targeting 49 local governments nationwide.

The meeting was attended by about 20 people including the Cultural City Promotion Committee, Cultural City Center, and related officials, reporting the progress of the cultural city project and exchanging opinions on the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s on-site review comments.

The main topics included ▲ concretization of cultural city contents ▲ cooperation plans linked with urban regeneration projects ▲ concretization of cultural city governance activities, and various discussions were held to advance toward becoming a legal cultural city.

Goheung-gun established a plan to strengthen urban competitiveness by utilizing unique local cultural resources based on the vision of “a joyful land where people gather, Motem Cultural City Goheung.”

The core contents set the business areas as people, Motem, and joy, focusing on discovering and nurturing people, fostering resident-led activities, revitalizing gatherings and space creation where cultural activities take place, and promoting creative and experimental activities and industries.

Based on this, the cultural city plan is designed to function as a sustainable regional development strategy and serve as an opportunity to transform Goheung’s urban culture.

Goheung-gun is fully preparing for the designation of a cultural city by appointing cultural coordinators, conducting subcommittee activities, executing project businesses, and linking the Dreaming Art Space project, using the unique local cultural resources Motem and Gapgye as mediators.

The 4th cultural city designation will be decided by the end of November after revising and updating the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s on-site review comments and holding a comprehensive presentation in mid-November. After a one-year preliminary city period, if finally selected as a legal cultural city, a total of 20 billion KRW including 10 billion KRW in national funds will be invested over five years to promote projects such as building a sustainable cultural ecosystem led by residents.

Deputy Governor Jeong Ha-yong said, “The cultural city project is a process where residents become designers to create a better city to live together, and we will actively support the proactive participation of residents to make it a Goheung-type cultural city.”
