[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] It has been revealed that 9 out of 10 Japanese people hold a negative perception of China. Meanwhile, 2 out of 3 Chinese people disliked Japan.
On the 21st, Chinese online media Pengpai released the results of a survey conducted by the China Foreign Languages Publishing and Distribution Administration and the Japanese nonprofit think tank Genron NPO, targeting 1,000 Japanese people.
The survey showed that 90.9% of respondents had a negative perception of China, an increase of 1.2 percentage points from last year (89.7%). This is the first time in five years since 2016 that the negative perception rate has exceeded 90%.
On the other hand, positive perception remained in the single digits at 9%. This response has been declining since peaking at 33.1% in 2007.
Chinese people's perception of Japan also worsened. In a survey of 1,547 Chinese people conducted by the China Foreign Languages Publishing and Distribution Administration and Japan's Genron NPO, negative perception toward Japan was 66.1%, an increase of more than 10 percentage points compared to the previous year (52.9%).
The main reason Chinese people disliked Japan was "not apologizing for its history of aggression," with 77.5% of respondents citing this, followed by "inappropriate remarks and behavior by some politicians" at 21%.
Positive perception dropped by 13.1 percentage points during the same period, down to 32.1%.
