Registered Pets in Daejeon Receive 10% Discount on Cremation Fees

[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] On the 21st, Daejeon City announced that it has signed a business agreement with animal funeral service companies including Ubasseu Co., Ltd. in Cheongju, Chungbuk, Daejeon Sky Pet in Okcheon-gun, Chungbuk, and Remember Park in Nonsan-si, Chungnam, allowing registered companion animals in the region to receive a 10% discount on cremation fees.

The discount system can be used by presenting the animal registration certificate along with a 10% discount coupon or a screenshot of the promotional screen posted in the announcements section on the Daejeon Animal Protection Center website to the companies.

Animal carcasses are legally required to be cremated through animal funeral services. However, the city explained that there are many illegal cases where animal carcasses are disposed of in volume-based waste bags or treated as medical waste through animal hospitals.

The agreement was made to prevent such illegal burial cases, encourage the registration of companion animals, and establish a culture of animal cremation.

As of the end of last month, there are about 86,000 registered companion animals in Daejeon. However, currently, there are no animal funeral facilities in Daejeon that can handle animal carcasses.

This is due to restrictions that prohibit installation within 300 meters of public gathering facilities and the perception of such facilities as unpleasant, which has prevented animal funeral facilities from being established in the region.

Heo Tae-jeong, Mayor of Daejeon, said, “I hope that this agreement will serve as an opportunity for Daejeon to take a step forward as a companion animal-friendly city.”
