Wanju-gun Wins Korea City Award for 3 Consecutive Years

The Only County Unit... Recognized for Achieving the Top City with High Income and Quality of Life

[Wanju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Wanju-gun announced on the 21st that it was the only county-level area nationwide to win the ‘2021 Korea Urban Award’ comprehensive category hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for three consecutive years.

According to the county, the places included in the top 1 to 3 in the comprehensive category this year were Seoul Jongno-gu, Busan Suyeong-gu, and Gyeonggi Uiwang-si in the metropolitan and large cities, and were narrowed down to Jinju-si in Gyeongnam, Mokpo-si in Jeonnam, and Wanju-gun in local and small cities.

Among the fierce competition with cities in the metropolitan area and provinces, Wanju-gun was the only one included in the county area.

In particular, Wanju-gun led the result of winning the award for three consecutive years only in the county-level area, winning the Prime Minister’s Award in 2019, followed by the Minister’s Award in 2020 and this year.

As a result, Wanju-gun was evaluated to have secured competitiveness as a livable city nationwide as a result of actively pursuing the realization of a top city with high income and quality of life.

In fact, Wanju-gun is known to have received balanced evaluations in all four evaluation indicators: society, economy, environment, and support system.

First, it is said that it was recognized for its leading competitiveness in △disaster vulnerability analysis results and detailed plans △operation of demand-responsive transport (DRT) and school commuting taxis △activation of after-school activity programs in elementary schools.

Also, it is reported that it received relatively favorable reviews in various evaluation items such as △various cultural programs △investment attraction activities leading to investment agreements and job creation △efforts to create parks within the city.

Park Seong-sil, the mayor of Wanju-gun, said, “It is very meaningful that Wanju-gun won the award for three consecutive years, recognizing not only sustainable urban competitiveness but also that it is a pleasant and livable city,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to develop Wanju as the nation’s top city in various fields such as hydrogen city, cultural city, and child-friendly city.”
