"Enhancing Public Safety and Convenience" KT Signs MOU with KIST to Utilize AI Robot Platform

[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] KT announced on the 20th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) to jointly promote projects aimed at enhancing public safety and convenience, as well as addressing national and social issues, through AI robot platforms and other technologies.

Through this MOU, KT and KIST will combine their capabilities in information and communication technology (ICT) business and research to collaborate in various robot fields and cloud services utilizing a 5G-based AI robot platform.

The specific areas of cooperation include ▲ 5G delivery robots and disinfection robots ▲ joint participation in national R&D projects for robot development platforms ▲ robot projects for hazardous workplaces such as chemical plants and power plants ▲ cloud services, among others.

KIST is currently conducting tests to apply KT’s 5G network to a prototype delivery robot for daily necessities that can be used in isolation spaces such as COVID-19 residential treatment centers. The demonstration service is scheduled for the second half of next year, and KT and KIST plan to collaborate on the development of control systems and platforms. Additionally, in relation to the recent enforcement of the Serious Accident Punishment Act aimed at strengthening industrial safety, KT plans to jointly develop and commercialize industrial robots by linking KIST’s industrial safety robots under development with KT’s existing solutions.

KT and KIST will also pursue cooperation in climate and environmental fields by combining KT’s nationwide fine dust monitoring equipment and big data with government-driven carbon neutrality and fine dust reduction policies. They will also jointly discover and commercialize promising technologies in the bio and healthcare sectors.

KT will assist KIST in adopting cloud technology. KIST is currently promoting the phased transition of its main systems, including its website, to the cloud. KT currently provides cloud services to over 8,000 various institutions and companies, and plans to collaborate based on its proven technology, scalability, and stability.

Yang Eun-kyung, Vice President of KIST, said, “Signing an MOU with KT, the leading 5G company in Korea, holds significant meaning in terms of spreading R&D achievements through innovation cooperation between the two companies and strengthening support for the industry.”

Shin Su-jung, Head of KT’s Enterprise Division, said, “We will contribute to solving social issues in the fields of disinfection and industrial robots by combining KIST’s AI robot development capabilities with KT’s 5G robot platform and cloud competitiveness. We will also strive to continuously discover and provide advanced converged ICT services for KIST’s digital transformation (DX).”
