[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] Recently, chicken producer 'Harim' launched 'The Misik Jangin Ramen,' priced at 2,200 won per pack, sparking heated debates among netizens over the product's price. Compared to existing premium ramen like 'Shin Ramyun Black,' which costs around 1,500 to 1,600 won, this is about 30% more expensive.
On the 18th, a post titled "The Era of 2,200 Won per Pack Ramen" was uploaded on an online community. The author shared a photo of the recently released premium ramen, saying, "It costs as much as 2,200 won per pack."
Some netizens responded negatively, saying, "People sensitive to artificial ingredients probably wouldn't eat ramen anyway, so this just fuels premium competition," "There are many products priced high just because they are labeled premium," and "If companies keep releasing expensive products, it becomes a burden for consumers."
Others commented, "Who looks for health benefits while eating ramen?" "Most people now know that MSG is not harmful to the body," and "How can people make a living if even affordable staple foods get more expensive?"
On the other hand, some argued that it is "a product that meets diverse consumer needs."
One netizen said, "As someone who gets skin troubles from processed foods, this ramen is promising," adding, "If it's expensive, just don't buy it. It's not like anyone is forcing you to buy it, so there's no need to fuss over the price."
Other supportive voices included comments like, "Those who want to buy it will buy it, and those who don't won't," "It's not something to be criticized just because it was made," and "It’s a product that broadens consumer choices."
Meanwhile, Kim Hong-guk, co-CEO of Harim, introduced the product by saying, "We made eco-friendly ramen for my youngest daughter, who gets red lips and skin spots after eating regular ramen." Co-CEO Yoon Seok-chun also explained, "30 to 40% of consumers want to eat properly made ramen even if it’s expensive. Although it takes some time, we intend to sell properly made ramen."
