Strategic Collaboration for Attraction with Local Governments in the Southwestern Region of Jeonnam

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeong Seunghyun] Local governments in the southwestern region of Jeonnam (Mokpo, Wando, Sinan, Jindo) have come together to discuss attracting the 2028 World Islands Expo to the southwestern coastal island belt area.

The Mokpo Chamber of Commerce and Industry held a meeting on the 18th attended by 16 members of the ‘2028 World Islands Expo Attraction Promotion Committee’.

Presided over by Lee Hancheol, chairman of the Mokpo Chamber of Commerce, the meeting shared achievements to date and future plans, agreeing to continuously spread the momentum for attracting the Islands Expo and build consensus.

They also exchanged opinions on the upcoming ‘2021 Southwestern Coast World Islands Forum’ scheduled for the 17th of next month. This forum will invite both domestic and international experts to explore future development plans for islands and will include a proclamation ceremony declaring the southwestern coastal island belt as the ‘Island Capital of Korea,’ highlighting the region as the center of island-related policies both domestically and internationally.

Going forward, the Promotion Committee plans to expand consensus for attracting the 2028 World Islands Expo by organizing regional tours of the island belt, island music concerts, and a UCC contest themed on islands and the sea.

Additionally, they intend to regularize domestic and international island academic conferences and expand the Promotion Committee to a nationwide level.

Chairman Lee stated, “We will do our best to promote various projects for attracting the World Islands Expo in cooperation with the Korea Islands Promotion Agency.”

Mayor Kim Jongsik urged, “We must continuously pursue various policies and projects that enhance the value of islands to spread the attraction atmosphere. I hope the Promotion Committee will do its best with professional insight and logic to attract the World Islands Expo.”
