[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] On the 42nd anniversary of the Buma Democratic Uprising on the 16th, the ruling and opposition parties reflected on the significance of the uprising and each vowed to win next year's presidential election.

Kim Jin-wook, spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea, said in a written statement, "The Democratic Party has worked hard to protect and develop democracy together with the people," adding, "Now, we are approaching a presidential election that will determine the future direction of the Republic of Korea by the choice of the people."

He continued, "As an instrument of the people, we will once again receive the people's choice to establish the 4th democratic government and create a Korea commanded by the people," emphasizing, "We will work even harder to uncover the truth of the Buma Democratic Uprising, restore the honor of the victims, and provide compensation."

Yang Jun-woo, spokesperson for the People Power Party, said in a statement, "Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung mentioned in his acceptance speech 'citizens who willingly endure inconvenience for the community,'" and pointed out, "The past where power prioritized the community to restrict citizens' rights and impose inconvenience was the essence of the previous dictatorship."

He expressed concern, saying, "I worry whether he has fallen into the hypocrisy of 'a benevolent dictatorship if I do it' intoxicated by power," and declared, "We will uphold the spirit of the Buma Democratic Uprising and fight to the end to protect true civic freedom."
