Agreement to Jointly Develop Technology for Extracting Clean Hydrogen from Ammonia
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Hanwha Corporation (Global Division) and Hanwha Impact signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Janggyo-dong Hanwha Building to collaborate with Wonik Materials and Wonik Holdings on hydrogen production and supply based on ammonia.
Ammonia is attracting attention as a means of storing and transporting hydrogen because its hydrogen storage density per volume is higher than that of liquefied hydrogen. Another advantage is that the existing liquefied ammonia transportation infrastructure can be utilized as is.
The four companies will first jointly develop a system that can produce hydrogen by cracking ammonia, and later cooperate to build large-scale hydrogen production and supply facilities. Subsequently, Hanwha Impact plans to utilize ammonia-reformed hydrogen in hydrogen gas turbine technology, and the four companies will work together to establish an eco-friendly hydrogen value chain.
Since 1992, Hanwha Corporation Global has been producing nitric acid, a raw material for explosives, using ammonia for over 30 years. Based on its extensive experience handling ammonia, the company plans to procure clean ammonia produced overseas, decompose it, and supply clean hydrogen domestically. Within Hanwha Group's hydrogen value chain, it will be responsible for ammonia procurement, trading, and hydrogen production through ammonia decomposition for hydrogen supply.
Currently, Hanwha Corporation Global is jointly participating with Wonik Materials and Wonik Holdings in the construction of an ammonia supply system for the "Ammonia-based Green Hydrogen Production and Utilization Demonstration Project" within the regulatory free zone in Chungju, Chungbuk.
Kim Maeng-yoon, CEO of Hanwha Corporation Global Division, stated, "Hanwha plans to procure clean ammonia produced overseas, decompose it, and supply clean hydrogen domestically," adding, "We will take the lead in the commercialization of green hydrogen through cooperation with Wonik."
