[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] Amid escalating military tensions between China and Taiwan, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized national reunification and warned Taiwan independence forces and foreign countries attempting to intervene in the Taiwan issue.

On the 9th, President Xi stated at the 110th anniversary ceremony of the Xinhai Revolution held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, “Taiwan independence and division are the greatest obstacles to national reunification and a serious threat to national rejuvenation,” adding, “Those who betray the motherland and divide the country will not end well and will surely be abandoned by the people and judged by history.” This is interpreted as a warning to Taiwan independence forces opposing reunification with China and causing friction.

Furthermore, President Xi also warned foreign countries attempting to intervene in the Taiwan issue. He said, “The Taiwan issue is entirely China’s internal affair, and no external interference will be tolerated,” and “No one should underestimate the firm determination, will, and strong capability of the Chinese people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.” He also added, “The historic mission of complete national reunification must be realized and certainly can be realized.”

China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has declared it will unify Taiwan by force if necessary. During the National Day holiday from October 1 to 4, China deployed a total of 149 military aircraft into Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).

President Xi said that Sun Yat-sen, who led the Xinhai Revolution, harbored the aspiration for the rejuvenation of China and that China has entered an irreversible historical process of the “great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.” However, while evaluating the achievements of the Xinhai Revolution, he pointed out its limitations in failing to achieve liberation.

Sun Yat-sen was the key figure in the Xinhai Revolution who overthrew the Qing Dynasty and established the Republic of China. The Xinhai Revolution, which began with the Wuchang Uprising on October 10, 1911, ended over 2,000 years of autocratic rule and established a republican system. Sun Yat-sen is a respected figure in both China and Taiwan.
