"Why Won't You Listen..." Man on Probation for Tearing Up Girlfriend's 4 Million Won Cash and Flushing It Down the Toilet

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] A man in his 30s who tore up several million won in cash, prepared through a loan by his cohabiting partner, with his hands and flushed it down the toilet, saying "she doesn't listen," and assaulted her multiple times, was sentenced to a suspended prison term.

According to the legal community on the 9th, Judge Yang Hwansung of the Criminal Division 3 at the Seoul Central District Court sentenced A (36, male), who was indicted on charges of assault and property damage, to 8 months in prison with a 2-year suspension on the 5th.

Earlier, A was prosecuted for tearing up 50,000 won bills worth about 4 million won, withdrawn by his cohabiting partner B (25, female), whom he lived with for about 1 year and 2 months in a one-room apartment in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, in March 2019, saying "she doesn't listen properly." He grabbed 100,000 to 200,000 won worth of bills at a time and tore them into several pieces before flushing them down the toilet.

A is also accused of assaulting B by throwing bibim noodles at her face in anger after she said "I want to go home" while he was cooking bibim noodles a month later. He is also charged with repeatedly slapping B during an argument. During the trial, B petitioned for a severe punishment for A three times.

The court found A guilty of the charges. It stated, "Considering the relationship with the victim, the extent of the damage, and the defendant's remorse."
