[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] The prosecution has requested an arrest warrant for rapper Jang Yongjun (21, stage name Noel), who is accused of driving without a license, refusing a breathalyzer test, and assaulting a police officer. Jang is the son of Jang Je-won, a member of the People Power Party.
On the afternoon of the 7th, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office filed an arrest warrant for Jang on charges including refusal to take a breathalyzer test under the Road Traffic Act. The pre-arrest detention hearing (warrant review) is scheduled to be held at 10:30 a.m. on the 12th at the Seoul Central District Court, presided over by Judge Moon Seong-gwan, who is in charge of warrants.
Earlier, on the evening of the 18th of last month, around 10:30 p.m., Jang was driving a Mercedes-Benz in Banpo-dong, Seocho-gu, when he was involved in a collision with another vehicle. He is accused of refusing the breathalyzer test requested by the police officers who arrived at the scene and of headbutting one of the officers.
The police summoned Jang on the 30th of last month and conducted an investigation for about six hours. When questioned by reporters about whether he had been driving under the influence or why he refused the breathalyzer test, Jang remained silent. After the investigation, he also remained silent when asked if he admitted to the charges or who was in the car with him. The police are reported to have secured related evidence such as CCTV footage from nearby bars to investigate whether Jang was driving under the influence.
On the 1st, the police applied charges including refusal to take a breathalyzer test under the Road Traffic Act, driving without a license, property damage, injury under the Criminal Act, and obstruction of official duties, and requested a pre-arrest warrant for Jang. However, charges of driving under the influence were not applied.
Meanwhile, Jang was sent to prosecution in April for assaulting a pedestrian in Busan, and last year he was indicted on charges including drunk driving and 'driver substitution,' receiving a suspended sentence in the first trial.
