[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] The civic group 'Moms Making Politics' announced that they will file a complaint with the Seoul Suseo Police Station against the SBS program 'Unanswered Questions' (Geu-al) production team for revealing personal information of Jeong-in, a 16-month-old adopted child.
On the 7th, the group claimed that the Geu-al production team's broadcast of Jeong-in's personal details and photos in the episode titled 'Jeong-in, I'm Sorry, and the Path Our Anger Must Take' violated the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes.
Furthermore, Gong Hye-jung, the representative of the Korea Child Abuse Prevention Association, which has been disclosing photos of abused children, also announced that she will be reported for violating the Act on the Protection of Children and Juveniles Against Sexual Offenses.
Article 35 of the Child Abuse Punishment Act stipulates that editors and others responsible for broadcasting cannot air personal information or photos that can identify perpetrators or victims involved in child protection cases.
They also pointed out that Representative Gong violated laws prohibiting the disclosure of information that can identify child victims of sexual crimes on information and communication networks, uploading information about the victims on internet sites and social networking services (SNS).
Seo Seong-min, the lawyer representing them, stated, "Even without revealing photos of the victims, the public interest purpose of highlighting issues of child abuse and sexual crimes against children can be sufficiently conveyed." He added, "Their actions are clear violations of the law," and said, "By disclosing personal information, harm can be caused to the victims or their bereaved families, and it can also lead to unintended consequences such as turning the matter into gossip."
