'Deokon Gongjuche' Font to Be Distributed for Free on Hangul Font Big Dictionary Website on the 8th

A digital font designed based on the handwriting of Princess Deokon of Joseon (1822?1844) has been developed. To celebrate Hangeul Day, the National Hangeul Museum announced on the 6th that it will distribute the font 'Deokon Gongjuche,' created using Princess Deokon's original manuscript 'Jagyeongjeon-gi (慈慶殿記),' for free on the Hangeul Font Grand Dictionary website starting from the 8th. Princess Deokon was the third daughter of King Sunjo and the last princess of Joseon. 'Jagyeongjeon-gi' is a book in which her father, King Sunjo, explained in Chinese characters the origin of Jagyeongjeon, a small pavilion located on a hill next to Yanghwadang in Changgyeonggung Palace. Princess Deokon transcribed this into Hangeul at the behest of her mother, Queen Sunwon. She added notes in Hangeul to the original text and then wrote a Korean translation.

The Deokon Gongjuche font, based on this handwriting, consists of one style for vertical writing and one for horizontal writing. It supports 2,788 Hangeul characters, 5,400 archaic Hangeul characters, 94 English letters, and 986 special characters. The vertical writing font was created by selecting characters with beautiful forms from 'Jagyeongjeon-gi' and reproducing them as close to the original as possible. The horizontal writing font was somewhat modified to suit modern usage. The National Hangeul Museum explained, "The vertical writing font is a cursive style of the Gungche script, where strokes are connected. Some characters are difficult to recognize, but it is meaningful as a digitalization of the original." Regarding the horizontal writing font, they said, "It is a regular form of Gungche, giving a natural and neat impression, suitable for letters or invitations."
