[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] On the 5th, Han Jeong-ae, Minister of Environment, stated, "We plan to finalize the '2050 Carbon Neutrality Scenario' within this year and complete the upward revision of the 2030 national greenhouse gas reduction target, NDC, as an interim goal toward carbon neutrality."

Minister Han made these remarks during her opening statement at the National Assembly Environment and Labor Committee’s audit of the Ministry of Environment held at the Government Complex Sejong on the same day.

Minister Han explained, "This year, we are focusing on drawing the blueprint and establishing the implementation foundation to realize carbon neutrality by 2050, which has been presented as a future milestone for our society. As the main ministry responsible for carbon neutrality, we aim to take the lead in implementing sectoral carbon neutrality measures such as the promotion of zero-emission vehicles, realization of a circular economy, and support for green industries." She added, "Throughout this entire process, it is essential to have the sympathy, understanding, and participation of members of our society, so we plan to conduct broad opinion gathering and consultations."

The Ministry of Environment also emphasized efforts to establish an environmental safety net. She explained, "Regarding fine dust reduction, we will enhance the seasonal management system, sectoral reduction measures, and Korea-China cooperation that have been promoted so far to achieve visible reductions in high-concentration fine dust. Additionally, to create a healthy and safe natural ecosystem, we will strengthen restoration and management of damaged areas and prepare strategies linking ecosystem and biodiversity conservation policies with climate crisis solutions."

Minister Han continued, "We will establish the principle of treating waste at its source and strengthen support for areas surrounding treatment facilities. Furthermore, starting in 2026, we will continue to implement waste reduction policies, including achieving zero direct landfill of municipal waste in the metropolitan area. We will also proactively and preemptively address environmental pollution damages and ensure thorough chemical safety management and accident response."
