Seoul City Implements 'Seoul Excellent Hanok Certification System' to Revitalize Hanok Architecture 5th Seoul Excellent Hanok Selection Grand Prize

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 3rd that it is implementing the "6th Seoul Excellent Hanok Certification Program" to inherit and develop the value of Hanok, and to promote Hanok architecture, accepting applications for excellent Hanok certification for Hanoks within Seoul until the 31st.

The Seoul Excellent Hanok Certification Program has been conducted once a year since 2016, and so far, a total of 75 sites have been selected as Seoul Excellent Hanoks over five rounds.

Hanoks in Seoul that have been constructed, extensively repaired (including maintenance), or remodeled since 2001 are eligible to apply. Once certified as an excellent Hanok, recipients receive a certification plaque and certificate, and enjoy various benefits such as regular facility inspections and support for minor repairs. Through an annual regular inspection by Hanok experts, advice on maintenance is provided, and if minor repairs such as replacement of damaged wood or roof repairs are needed based on the inspection results, the city directly carries out the repair work.

The decision on excellent Hanok certification is made by the Seoul Excellent Hanok Certification Review Committee, composed of Hanok experts, through document review and on-site inspection. Application documents must be submitted to the Seoul Hanok Policy Division by the 31st. Applicants can check and prepare the application documents on the Seoul Hanok Portal website and submit them either in person or via email.

Additionally, Seoul will produce and distribute a photo book of the 12 Hanoks certified in the 5th round of the Seoul Excellent Hanok Certification in 2020. The excellent Hanok photo book was created to promote the charm of Hanok as everyday living spaces and to revitalize Hanok architecture through exemplary cases of well-preserved modern urban Hanoks and contemporary Hanoks that retain traditional appearances while evolving and developing within Seoul.

Kim Seung-won, Director of Balanced Development Planning at Seoul City, said, “We are implementing the Seoul Excellent Hanok Certification Program to discover exemplary cases of Hanok architecture and widely promote the charm of Hanok as residential living spaces. We hope that Hanok architecture will be revitalized through the excellent Hanoks certified by Seoul City and that this will serve as an opportunity to inherit and develop our unique cultural heritage.”
