Rep. Heo Eun-a of the People Power Party's Claim on the 1st
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] It has been claimed that the North Korean cyberterrorist group 'Kimsuky,' known for hacking the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, is carrying out all-out cyberattacks targeting politics, medical fields, and academia.
Heo Eun-ah, a member of the People Power Party (Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting Communications Committee, first-term), distributed a press release on the 1st ahead of the Ministry of Science and ICT’s audit, stating, "After tracking and analyzing the hacking details of the Atomic Energy Research Institute together with white-hat hackers, we confirmed such circumstances."
According to Rep. Heo, Kimsuky uses a strategy of frequently changing domains to avoid being tracked, so the progress of their activities can be analyzed by backtracking the usage history of IPs and domains used in the attacks.
Accordingly, earlier this year, a phishing attack replicating the Daum login page was carried out from IP 210.16.120.34, which used the same phishing code as Kimsuky’s hacking last year that attacked medical institutions such as AstraZeneca and Yonsei Medical Center using IP 45.13.135.103.
The targets of the attack from IP 210.16.120.34 included former Democratic Party member Bae Jae-jung, Busan Mayor Park Hyung-joon, and a professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at Chungbuk National University, confirming Kimsuky’s all-out attacks on politics, medical fields, and academia.
Rep. Heo stated, "The email list targeted by the attacks included not only celebrities but also many ordinary citizens," and emphasized, "Since anyone can be a target of North Korea’s hacking attacks, maintaining information security is necessary."
