[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] The ‘2:2 Debate among Presidential Candidates,’ a key pledge of Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, has been canceled.

A People Power Party presidential primary election management committee official explained on the 29th that the 2:2 presidential debate was not adopted, saying, "We considered introducing it, but it was difficult because the debate was being prepared under the supervision of a broadcasting company."

Previously, Lee said, "If presidential candidates find issues with divided opinions and hold a 2:2 debate, it would allow for multifaceted evaluation and help select an excellent presidential candidate." In an interview with this outlet, Lee also expressed expectations, saying, "The 2:2 debate has infinite possibilities. If candidates understand this destructive power, it would be good to prepare for a 2:2 debate battle. It could be an enormously successful event."

While the election management committee cited broadcasting circumstances, it appears that Lee’s diminished influence over the primary process also played a role. Earlier, some People Power Party presidential candidates expressed dissatisfaction toward Lee, accusing him of trying to become the main figure. After controversy, an election management committee different from Lee’s original plan was ultimately formed.

A representative from Lee’s side expressed regret over the election management committee’s decision, saying, "There are unfortunate aspects." Regarding criticism that Lee’s pledges are repeatedly thwarted within the party, the representative said, "In the case of the ‘Public Official Qualification Exam,’ discussions are ongoing within the Public Official Competency Enhancement TF, and we are awaiting the results."
